The burning of Atlanta is one of the civil wars most famous and studied battles.Atlanta and its burning by Gen.Sherman and his troops was also the back drop for the timeless movie Gone With the Wind.Sadly most of the battlefields have been lost over the years due to Atlantas growth.The hollowed battle ground is now covered with modern day buildings.Not all is lost for Atlantas civil war history there are still markers scatered threw out the city and preserved battlefields located just out side of the city.The civil war era in Atlanta also left the city with many monuments and artifacts. Atlanta is home to one of the largest and most complete collections of civil war artifacts.As far as monuments to the civil war go Atlanta has to have the largest monument of all.Its mt.Rushmore/Disney theme style park is dedicated compltly to the civl war era.If your planning a visit to Atlanta be sure to add some of the countries coolest civil war sites to the must see list.
The Margaret Mitchell House:Gone With the Wind
This is definatly a must see site for any fan of the Gone With the Wind story.The building was once home to Margaret Mitchell one of Americas most famous authors.In this apartment home in 1936 Margaret wrote the words to the story that would win the hearts and minds of generations to come.Margaret sold the movie rights to Gone With the Wind for $50,000 before the book was even published.Making it the most ever paid for an authors first novel.The magic of story telling continues inthe building as adult and youth writing classes are offered...................Tours are offered M-Sat 10-5 Sun 12-5 There is a small fee.located at 990 Peachtree St Atlanta Ga
The Atlanta Cyclorama.Featuring the Worlds Largest Oil Painting:
At the Atlanta Cyclorama civil war buffs will have a chance to view a great piece of art work paying tribute to the battle of Atlanta.The painting weighs in at over 10,000 pounds and covers 15,030sq ft..The painting was made in a circular shape and painted in 1885-86.Visitors will be able to see a short film narrated by James Earl Jones about the campaign leading up to the battle of Atlanta.Then enter the cyclorama and be seated the visitors seats will slowly move around the painting showing highlights from the July 22,1864 battle of Atlanta..There is also a museum located on the property featuring civil war artifacts and a civil war era train named" The Texas" which was part of the Great Locomotive Chase......open Tue-Sat 9-4 a small fee is charged.
The Atlanta History center DuBose Gallery:Largest and most complete civil war artifact collection.
This Atlanta history center is located on 33acres and is packed witth tons of historical items.It is also home to the 9,200sq ft DuBose Gallery the largest and most complete civil war collection in america.The Gallery features alot of rare items including a Union supply wagon,log books of the C.S.S. Shenondoah a medel of honor won by colored troops,cannons,flags,guns,uniforms and just about on of everything from the war.This is a great interactive museum for children and history buffs of all kinds..........open M-Sat 10-5 Sun 12-5 located at 130 west Paces Ferry Rd.
Stone Mountain Park......................Stone Mountain is a large civil war era park featuring boats,hotels,,campsites,food,rides,laser show and fire works.The star of the show is the largest relief sculpture in the world.The carving was started by famed mt.Rushmore sculpture but later finished by others.The carving is a civil war monument of Pres.Jefferson Davis,Gen Robert E. Lee and StoneWall Jackson.The surface measures 3-acres.Many festivals and events take place threw out the year contact for seasonal hours.A mesuem featuring buildings from early America and plantation life are also on the property.Open year round
